Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a notorious bandit in Bojinji Village, on the outskirts of Bauchi, recovering millions of Naira in cash and a large cache of ammunition.
The operation, carried out without prior warning, caught residents by surprise.
Sources said the suspect had relocated to Bauchi from Zamfara State, claiming to be fleeing persecution, and had settled in the community with his family.
While Bauchi has been a haven for people affected by conflicts in neighbouring states, security operatives say some criminal elements exploit this to hide illicit activities.
“The DSS traced the suspect’s illicit wealth and movements before executing the operation,” a security source said.
Bandit’s lavish lifestyle exposed
Investigations revealed that the suspect was known locally for his extravagant lifestyle, spending entire days drinking at Unguwar Yelwan Angas and buying alcohol for others.
Residents never suspected criminal activity until the DSS intervention.
Security officials have urged community members to assist security agencies by reporting suspicious individuals, particularly those whose lifestyle seems inconsistent with their means.
Such vigilance is considered crucial in preventing crimes and exposing criminal networks.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the bandit’s operations and to identify any accomplices within the state, according to security sources.
Authorities call for public cooperation
Security agencies reaffirmed their commitment to tackling crime in Bauchi and warned that any person found aiding criminal elements would face prosecution.
They encouraged to remain alert and cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace in their communities.
Authorities said similar targeted raids will continue as part of a broader strategy against organized crime.
