The Zamfara State Police Command has apprehended a notorious armed bandit, Muhammadu Dan Kani, widely known as “Akki,” in its intensified crackdown on banditry and other violent crimes.
Dan Kani, 57, was arrested in Funtua, Katsina State, after intelligence linked him to several kidnapping cases across Zamfara. Police recovered 11 fabricated guns, 25 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and six live cartridges from him.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, announced the arrest during a press briefing on Tuesday at the Command headquarters in Gusau. He said investigations were ongoing to trace the origin of the weapons and identify other members of the syndicate.
In a related operation, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit intercepted a Toyota Corolla during patrol and discovered four AK-47 rifles, 200 rounds of PKT ammunition, 28 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and four empty magazines hidden in a sack of oranges. The driver, Nasuru Dawan Jiya, confessed he was transporting the arms to bandits in Gurusu village.
Likewise, operatives on patrol along the Gusau-Sokoto Highway intercepted two men on motorcycles near Gada Biyu on September 19, 2025. They were found with 18 fabricated firearms, and the case has been handed to the State Intelligence Criminal Department (SICD) in Gusau.
The Commissioner said the string of arrests and seizures demonstrates the Command’s renewed determination to curb insecurity in Zamfara. He urged residents to continue giving security agencies credible and timely information.
