The Kano State chapter of the Spinal Cord Injury Association has called on the government and stakeholders not to neglect the plight of individuals living with spinal cord injuries.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit to the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled Persons as part of activities marking the upcoming International Day of Spinal Cord Injury, slated for September 5.
‘We need more than sympathy’ – Association chair
Speaking during the visit, the association’s chairman, Abdulraman Uba Daushe, said the goal of the observance is to create greater awareness on spinal cord injuries and equip survivors with knowledge on self-care and long-term management.
“This day gives victims a platform to share their stories and struggles. It also helps mobilise donations like wheelchairs, diapers, and essential medical supplies,” Daushe noted.
He also emphasized the need for better public education on how to respond to accidents, warning that improper handling often leads to secondary spinal injuries.
Ministry pledges full backing
Responding on behalf of the Commissioner, Mairo Halliru Haruna, Director of Special Duties in the Ministry, commended the association’s work and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting persons with disabilities.
“This Ministry is committed to reducing the burden on spinal cord injury survivors. Your efforts are recognised and we will continue to collaborate closely,” Haruna said.
The visit featured in-depth discussions between officials of the ministry and representatives of the association on potential areas of collaboration, ranging from public sensitisation to sustained medical support.
