Niger State – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that over 100 bodies have been recovered following a devastating flood that hit the Kpege area of Mokwa in Niger State early Thursday morning.

In a swift response to the disaster, NEMA activated its Minna Operations Office and deployed technical personnel, equipment, and senior officials from its headquarters in Abuja, including the Director of Search and Rescue.

NEMA said it is working in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross, local volunteers, and security agencies to continue the search for victims and provide urgent humanitarian assistance.

The agency revealed that the worst-hit areas include the Unguwan Hausawa and Tiffin Maza communities within Mokwa township.

It added that while injured victims have been treated and discharged from various health centres, search and rescue teams remain on-site to find more missing persons and prevent secondary hazards.

Relief materials deployed, water treatment ongoing

As part of its emergency intervention, NEMA said it has distributed vital relief items, including food, household utensils, tents, and clean drinking water, to affected families.

A mobile water treatment unit has also been deployed to provide safe water to flood-hit communities.

The list of items was formally presented to the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, who commended NEMA for its prompt and comprehensive response, including the on-ground presence of its Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar.

NEMA has advised residents to remain alert and report any unusual developments as emergency teams monitor the situation.

It added that a full post-disaster assessment will be conducted to guide long-term recovery and reconstruction in the affected areas.
