The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of officers connected to the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in the Effurun axis of Delta State.
The IGP, while briefing journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, said the officers affected include Nuhu Usman, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), alongside five other members of his unit.
Disu condemned the April 26 occurrence as a “criminal and unprofessional” action that violated the core oath of the Nigeria Police Force.
The IGP said he had directed the immediate relocation of the officers involved to Abuja to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and an Orderly Room Tribunal, both already underway.
“The investigation confirmed, without any ambiguity, that ASP Nuhu Usman acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 (which governs the use of firearms) and established Standard Operating Procedures.
“No level of criminal suspicion against a citizen justifies extra-judicial killing. Our duty is to protect life, not to extinguish it,” he said.
Disu further noted that the FDC and Orderly Room Tribunal had recommended the immediate dismissal of Usman, two superintendents, and three inspectors involved in the operation.
He explained that after dismissal, the officers would be transferred to judicial authorities for prosecution over unlawful homicide.
The IGP added that the recommendations had been submitted to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final statutory approval.
Disu expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be delivered swiftly, openly, and decisively.
He also urged members of the public not to resort to self-help and called for calm across Delta State and the country.
“Justice for Mene Ogidi will be swift, transparent, and absolute,” he promised.
