The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has cautioned the public over the spread of unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste.

In a statement shared on its X handle on Sunday, the agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a report about the sale of the products in Kaduna State, which triggered an inquiry.

NAFDAC stated that its operatives inspected the shop where the items were sold and uncovered two suspected fake products labelled as “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g.”

“The shop owner informed the team that the products were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative; however, no proof of purchase was provided.

“These products have not met the required regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance, thereby posing a potential risk to public health and safety,” the agency said.

NAFDAC further noted that the products had been withdrawn from circulation as investigations continued to trace those responsible for distribution.

According to the agency, the affected items include “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g,” both lacking batch numbers and NAFDAC registration numbers.

The products are labelled as produced by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, located in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with production dates in August 2025 and expiry dates in August 2029.

The agency said all zonal directors and state coordinators had been instructed to heighten monitoring and remove the counterfeit products wherever discovered.

It advised distributors, retailers, and consumers to remain vigilant and confirm the authenticity and physical state of products before purchase or use.

Consumers were urged to report suspected cases of substandard or counterfeit products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or send an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

The agency also encouraged healthcare professionals and patients to report any adverse effects linked to the products through its official reporting platforms, including its website and the Med-Safety mobile application.
