The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has handed the Federal Government a four-day ultimatum, urging it to immediately begin the implementation of a newly approved salary structure for university lecturers nationwide.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, disclosed this on Thursday while speaking at a public lecture organised at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, in Bauchi.

According to Piwuna, the union has allowed the government four days to start payment under the new salary framework, which had earlier received approval after lengthy negotiations between the union and government representatives.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.

The ASUU president noted that the demand forms part of wider efforts to improve the welfare conditions of university lecturers and resolve persistent complaints about inadequate pay, which he said has fueled brain drain and weakened standards in Nigeria’s higher education system.

He further stated that although several agreements had been reached with the government in previous years, implementation has often been inconsistent, resulting in frequent disagreements and industrial actions.
