The Senate has invited the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, along with major players in the aviation industry, for an immediate engagement following widespread complaints about the sharp and unexpected surge in local airfare rates.
This development follows a motion presented by Buhari Abdulfatai on the Senate floor, cautioning that the rapidly increasing ticket prices threaten national mobility and could result in severe travel disruptions soon.
Senator Buhari, while steering the discussion, pointed out that citizens have repeatedly voiced concerns in recent months as domestic flight fares continue to climb.
He disclosed that a single trip from Abuja to Lagos now ranges between N400,000 and N600,000, a cost many travellers can no longer manage.
The lawmaker representing Oyo State stressed that the trend is particularly troubling given the worsening challenges and insecurity along major road corridors.
“We need to invite stakeholders of our airline agencies to interact and interrogate the issues. Immediate steps must be taken before the festive period,” he said.
