The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old resident of Jiddel in Michika town, identified as a 500-level student of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, for alleged involvement in cybercrime.
In a statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed the arrest and detailed the suspect’s activities.
He said the suspect created multiple fake social media accounts using pictures of unsuspecting women without their consent.
“The accounts operated by the suspect include Rose Yarlele, Procious Favourite, Wange Precious, Joy Dennis, and others,” Nguroje stated.
According to him, the accused used the victims’ pictures as display photos on WhatsApp, TikTok, and Facebook, attaching offensive captions such as “sexy lesbian” and “I am lesbian.”
Investigations further revealed that the suspect obtained nude pictures from some victims, which he allegedly used to threaten, extort money, and demand sexual favors. Nguroje added that the suspect also advertised some victims for hookup services, thereby damaging their reputations, while operating with multiple WhatsApp numbers.
“These criminal activities caused serious emotional, financial, and reputational harm to several victims,” he said.
He explained that operatives attached to the CP’s Monitoring Unit acted on credible intelligence that led to the suspect’s arrest.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, ordered a thorough investigation into the matter and directed that the suspect be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
He warned individuals engaging in sextortion, cyberstalking, impersonation, and online harassment to desist, stressing that the police would not hesitate to bring offenders to justice.
Morris also advised social media users, especially women, to exercise caution and avoid sharing personal pictures with strangers. He assured that the Command remains committed to safeguarding the dignity, security, and rights of residents both offline and online.
“Members of the public are advised to report suspicious cyber activities or blackmail attempts to the Command,” the Commissioner stated
