The Northern Youth Assembly (NYA), Kano State Chapter, has raised alarm over the persistent electricity outages plaguing the state, calling for immediate and strategic action from all stakeholders.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Sulaiman Idris, and made available to journalists, the group expressed deep concern over the deteriorating power situation, stating that it has brought “immense hardship” to residents and businesses alike.
“This critical situation reflects the continued failure of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to effectively distribute power within the state. It also points to the Federal Government’s unfulfilled promises of ensuring a stable and reliable power supply for Nigerians,” the statement read.
The NYA noted that the electricity crisis has slowed economic activities and diminished quality of life in Kano.
The group decried what it described as repeated government assurances with no tangible improvement on the ground.
“We, therefore, use this medium to call upon stakeholders — including community leaders, energy experts, and policymakers — to urgently convene and deliberate on sustainable solutions to Kano’s electricity crisis,” it stated.
“This issue demands immediate attention and coordinated efforts at all levels.”
The youth organization also called on wealthy Nigerians, industrialists, and investors—particularly from the North—to consider stepping in with independent and innovative power solutions.
“Moreover, we issue a strong call to wealthy individuals, investors, and industrialists in Kano, the Northern region, and across Nigeria: Now is the time to invest in independent power generation and distribution companies. Kano needs innovative, localized solutions to meet its growing electricity demand.”
NYA also expressed optimism that with unity, innovation, and strategic investment, Kano can overcome its electricity challenges and become a model for sustainable power solutions in Nigeria.
