A torrential rainfall in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Wednesday morning has displaced many residents and led to the collapse of at least eight buildings.
The rain, which started at about 6:15 a.m. and lasted for over three hours, triggered widespread flooding in several communities including Bulumkutu, Abuja, Moduganari, and Ngomari.
According to eyewitnesses, families living near riverbanks were among the worst hit, with many forced to abandon their homes as floodwaters surged in.
“Water entered my house around 8 a.m. and I had to evacuate with my wife and kids,” one resident in Bulumkutu recounted.
Aisha Suraju, a local provision seller, said the flood destroyed most of her goods.
“My shop is gone. Everything is soaked. I don’t even know where to start from,” she said tearfully.
Police deploy rescue teams
In response to the disaster, the Borno State Police Command deployed officers to assist in rescue efforts and provide emergency support in the affected areas.
Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso confirmed that eight buildings collapsed due to the flooding but thankfully, no fatalities were reported.
The state Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmaji, urged residents to remain calm and prioritize safety.
“Parents must ensure children stay away from floodwaters. The dangers are real,” he warned.
SEMA confirms worsening flood situation
The incident comes amid growing concerns over seasonal flooding in Borno.
Just days ago, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that over 18,400 people have been displaced by floods across the state this year alone.
Authorities are expected to intensify relief efforts as more rains are forecast in the coming weeks.
