Governors under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) have commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold economic reforms, which they said have stabilized Nigeria’s macroeconomic environment, improved fiscal inflows to the states, and led to the long-awaited reimbursement of legacy debts owed to sub-national governments.
Vice Chairman of the Forum and Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, described the refunds as “a major relief that will enhance service delivery and strengthen state-level fiscal sustainability.”
Speaking at the end of the PGF’s two-day strategic retreat held from October 16 to 17, 2025, in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, Governor Sani said the debt repayments demonstrate President Tinubu’s sincerity and commitment to rebuilding trust between the federal and state governments.
“President Tinubu has shown sincerity of purpose in implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Governor Sani stated.
“The refund of inherited debts to states is not just a fiscal measure — it is a symbol of fairness and partnership in our federal system.”
Governor Sani, who also serves as the Coordinating Governor for the Northwest, said the Forum reaffirmed its collective commitment to deepening fiscal transparency, expanding agricultural investments, and empowering youth and MSMEs across APC-controlled states.
“Our states will continue to champion economic inclusion, innovation, and social protection systems that ensure prosperity for all citizens,” he added.
While acknowledging improvements in the nation’s security outlook, the governors pledged continued support for intelligence-driven operations and community-based policing initiatives to consolidate peace and safety across the federation.
“Security remains a shared responsibility,” Governor Sani said.
“The progress achieved so far must be sustained through collaboration between security agencies, communities, and state governments.”
Retreat reinforces shared vision
The Kebbi retreat, which drew participation from all APC-controlled states, provided a reflective platform for governors to assess Nigeria’s socio-economic direction and renew their shared commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Governor Sani said the session strengthened collective resolve among APC governors to align their state policies with President Tinubu’s vision of a stable, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.
