A Magistrate Court in Kano has convicted five individuals for allowing their goats to roam freely and destroy ornamental plants maintained by the state government along Lodge Road and Race Course Road.
The culprits — led by Usman Abdullahi — were prosecuted by the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, which charged them for violating Section 7(e) of the Kano State Public Health Law, 2019.
The law prohibits actions that degrade public infrastructure or cause environmental nuisance.
According to Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu, who led the prosecution, seventeen goats belonging to the defendants had grazed on and destroyed government-planted greenery designed to beautify the city and improve air quality.
The ministry stressed that such plants are critical for combating climate change and enhancing urban aesthetics.
The court found the defendants guilty and sentenced them to one month imprisonment, offering them an option of a ₦25,000 fine each.
In addition, they were ordered to jointly pay ₦100,000 in compensation for the damage.
The Ministry of Environment reiterated the importance of responsible animal rearing and called on residents to report similar violations via WhatsApp at https://wa.me/2348030719901 or through email at kanoenvironment@gmail.com.
