The Anglican Diocese of Kaduna has confirmed the death of Venerable Edwin Achi, the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maigero, who died while being held by armed kidnappers.
Achi was abducted on October 28, 2025, along with his wife and daughter, after gunmen invaded their residence in Nissi community, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The family had reportedly just moved into the area when the attackers struck.
The kidnappers contacted relatives shortly after the abduction and demanded ₦600m for the release of the three victims.
Achi, who hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, remained in captivity for weeks before the church announced his death.
In a statement on Thursday, the Diocese said:
“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing unto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero. Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, 2025, has been confirmed dead.”
The Diocese described his passing as a “painful loss” to the Anglican community and to many who had benefitted from his ministry.
As of the time of the announcement, Achi’s wife and daughter remain in captivity.
The abductors have reportedly refused to reduce their ransom demand despite the priest’s death, deepening concerns about the safety of the remaining hostages.
