For the first time in more than a decade, Mallam Fatori, a border town in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, witnessed a peaceful democratic exercise.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairmanship and Councillorship primaries were held on Sunday, at the council headquarters in Mallam Fatori.
The exercise drew political figures, party executives, and supporters who ensured the process was transparent, credible, and peaceful.
Borno State commissioner for information and internal security, Prof. Usman Tar, who hails from Abadam, congratulated the APC Chairmanship candidate and all councillorship aspirants for their maturity and discipline.
He described the exercise as “a model of grassroots democracy and a reflection of the people’s determination to strengthen participatory politics and peaceful coexistence.”
The event was attended by the executive chairman of Abadam Local Government Council, Hon. Abubakar Aji Mustapha, local APC leaders, and other stakeholders.
The APC chairman of Abadam also praised party members for their “unity, cooperation, and peaceful conduct throughout the process.”
Prof. Tar said the outcome of the primaries would “further consolidate the APC’s strength and deepen internal democracy at the local level.”
The primaries were conducted across all ten wards of Abadam—Arege, Banowa, Fuguwa, Jabullam, Kudokurgu, Mallam Fatori/Kessa, Malam Kaunari, Yau, Yawa Kura, and Yituwa.
Observers, youth representatives, and women mobilizers monitored the process to ensure fairness and inclusiveness.
Abadam, located about 197 kilometers from Maiduguri, shares borders with Niger Republic.
Despite its distance and security challenges, the successful conduct of the APC primaries in Mallam Fatori reflects the resilience and commitment of the people to democracy and peace in Borno State.
