The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh alert predicting above-normal rainfall in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and seven other northern states as the country approaches the peak of the 2025 rainy season.
This was disclosed in NiMet’s August weather outlook, as shared by the agency’s Meteorological Manager for Gombe, Gayus Musa, on Tuesday.
The states expected to witness heavy rainfall include: Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina, Yobe, Borno and Kebbi.
Flood threat rises across northern Nigeria
According to NiMet, the increased rainfall in these areas will likely result in elevated soil moisture levels and rising river flows, significantly heightening the threat of both flash and riverine flooding.
The agency advised residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to stay alert and adhere to evacuation orders when necessary.
“Keep essential documents and valuables in waterproof containers,” NiMet urged.
Emergency agencies, leaders urged to act
NiMet called on emergency response agencies to act proactively using its regular weather updates to sensitize and prepare communities for possible evacuation or mitigation steps.
Community leaders were also encouraged to activate local response plans and raise awareness about hygiene, health, and flood safety practices.
Temperature drop may affect children, elderly
Beyond rainfall, NiMet noted that August temperatures will be cooler — especially during nighttime and early morning hours — with potential impacts on vulnerable populations.
“Cooler mornings and nights may lead to cold-related illnesses; dress infants and young children warmly,” it said, recommending increased intake of Vitamin C to strengthen immunity.
NiMet further forecast that while most northern states will see intense rain, areas such as Taraba, southern Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to experience slightly below-normal rainfall. A brief dry spell is also likely in the Southwest during early August.
