Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has been buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a quiet but historic ceremony attended by dignitaries, political leaders, and mourners from across the country.
The burial followed Islamic rites and took place in the courtyard of his private residence shortly after Janazah (funeral) prayers were observed at a makeshift prayer ground nearby.
As part of the farewell, Buhari’s body — draped in Nigeria’s green-white-green flag — was carried by military pallbearers and laid to rest with full national and military honours.
Soldiers stood in solemn attention as a military band played a funeral trumpet piece, followed by gun salutes in tribute to the former head of state.
Tinubu, Shettima, and top officials receive Buhari’s body
Buhari’s remains, flown in from London, were received at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, and other senior officials.
From the airport, the body was conveyed under tight security to Daura for burial.
The atmosphere in Daura was one of deep mourning, as locals and national figures alike paid their last respects to the man who ruled Nigeria both as a military leader from 1983 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president between 2015 and 2023.
