Security has been intensified around the residence of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, as preparations for his burial enter a critical phase.
There was heavy deployment of security operatives on Tuesday, including men of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), stationed at strategic points near the premises.
A source who exited the compound confirmed that the digging of Buhari’s grave had already commenced.
According to earlier information, a section of the late president’s residence has been designated and marked for his interment, with plans to fence the area.
“The portion where the grave would be dug would be fenced,” the source said.
Body to arrive Tuesday, funeral venue yet to be confirmed
According to Garba Shehu, spokesperson to the late president, Buhari’s body is expected to arrive Nigeria between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Tuesday, July 15.
However, he clarified that the venue for the funeral prayer would be decided by the Katsina State Government.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has been leading national mourning activities, will personally receive the body at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila had earlier been dispatched to the United Kingdom to accompany the body back to Nigeria.
Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London, where he had been receiving medical care.
