Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has expressed optimism ahead of his side’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Roma, despite the team’s disappointing recent performances.

United approach Tuesday’s meeting at Old Trafford having failed to record a win in their last nine games across all competitions, their poorest sequence of results since the 1988-89 campaign.

The club currently occupy 17th position in the Premier League and 21st place in the Champions League standings after three matches, intensifying scrutiny on Carrick as questions continue to emerge about his future at Old Trafford.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Carrick has maintained that he is enthusiastic about the opportunity to improve the team’s fortunes.

Speaking before the fixture, he admitted that his positive outlook might appear strange considering the team’s recent struggles but stressed that he remained eager to embrace the challenge.

Meanwhile, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has called for belief among his teammates, arguing that a single victory could help Manchester United transform their season.

The 21-year-old, who has recently recovered from a muscular injury, recognised the team’s disappointing campaign but stressed the need to uphold the club’s principles and determination.

United will be seeking an important victory over Roma to restore confidence and improve their position in the Champions League competition.
