Tragedy struck the Gwammaja area of Kano city after two Islamic school pupils, 12-year-old Abdullahi and 14-year-old Aminu, reportedly died from ingesting a poisonous substance, while four others are being treated in hospital.
The heartbreaking incident, which occurred on Friday on Kotu Street, has thrown the community into mourning.
According to reports, the children mistook a white powder—believed to be milk—that was thrown over a fence into their compound for a safe food additive and mixed it into tea on Wednesday.
Their Islamic teacher, Malam Nafiu, revealed that the boys began to fall ill shortly after drinking the tea.
“It looked like milk, something usually added to tea. Sadly, Abdullahi and Aminu could not survive, though four others are recovering,” he said.
He added that both deceased pupils hailed from Dandume Local Government Area in Katsina State and had come to Kano to pursue Qur’anic studies.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said foam was seen around the boys’ mouths—raising suspicions of poisoning.
However, the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed pending official autopsy and toxicology results.
A resident, Tahir Majid, described the incident as unprecedented in the area.
“These boys were quiet and respectful. We’ve never experienced anything like this. The government must investigate and bring justice,” he said.
Families of the victims have been notified, and their parents are said to be on their way from Katsina State.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement as investigations continue.
