Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has announced a new scholarship program for 220 lecturers at the University of Maiduguri to pursue their Ph.D. degrees.

The announcement followed his conferment with an honorary Doctor of Science degree during the university’s 25th combined convocation ceremony.

The event also marked the relaunch of the UNIMAID Endowment Fund aimed at boosting research and development.

Governor Zulum said the scholarship will support 200 Borno indigenes and 20 non-indigenes teaching at the institution.

He explained that 100 beneficiaries will study abroad while 120 will complete their programs in universities across Nigeria.

“I wish to announce the scholarship to 220 lecturers of University of Maiduguri to pursue their doctorate degree,” he said.

“Out of the number, 100 will have the opportunity to study abroad while 120 will study in universities within Nigeria.”

“As part of our contribution to the growth and development of this University, I will like to announce that 20 non indigene lecturers will also be given the opportunity to pursue their doctorate degrees,” Zulum stated.

The governor expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying he was honored to be celebrated alongside Emir of Kazaure Najib Hussaini Adamu and philanthropist Emeka Offor.

He said all honorees are expected to remain ambassadors of the university.

Zulum commended the university for its contribution to national development, noting that UNIMAID has produced graduates serving across government and the private sector.

He endorsed the relaunch of the Endowment Fund as a timely step to enhance the institution’s research capacity.

“The University is justified in re-launching their Endowment Fund, so that they can mobilise resources to enhance their research and development capabilities. For us in Borno State, partnership with University has become a way of life,” he said.

He commended the chief launcher, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, and called on alumni and supporters to contribute generously.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor of Adamawa State Ahmodu Umaru Fintiri, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, deputy governor of Yobe State Idi Barde Gubana, and the Shehu of Borno Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, among others.
