The Rivers State House of Assembly has stopped its impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The House reached the decision at plenary on Thursday, TVC News, a Lagos-based television station, reported.
The assembly had on 8 January commenced an impeachment action against the governor and his deputy, Mrs Odu, a professor, over allegations of gross misconduct. The process was, however, suspended after a court barred the lawmakers and the chief judge from continuing with it.
The most recent decision by the legislators to discontinue the impeachment effort followed the fourth intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the prolonged political crisis in the oil-rich state.
As with previous episodes, the latest political turmoil stemmed from a renewed rift between Mr Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Mr Tinubu, two weeks ago, met with major political stakeholders, including Messrs Wike and Fubara, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in a fresh bid to resolve the lingering political impasse in Rivers.
