The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has directed the Jos Electricity Distribution Company to remit N72bn to the Federal Government within 60 days.

The committee also ordered the Kano Electricity Distribution Company to pay N40.7bn, representing 50 per cent of its verified debt of N81.5bn, to the government within 30 days.

The directive forms part of the committee’s ongoing probe into the multi-trillion-naira debts owed by electricity distribution companies to the Federation Account.

In recent times, the Public Accounts Committee has recovered significant amounts for the Federal Government in both local and foreign currencies.

A statement issued Wednesday night by the committee’s media unit said the directive followed a public hearing on documents submitted by the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc and the 2021 report of the Auditor General for the Federation, held in Abuja.

The statement revealed that “Jos DisCo’s indebtedness as of September 30, 2020, stood at N161.7bn,” adding that “The company admitted to owing N72bn as of May 30, 2025.”

It further stated that a representative of NBET informed the committee that as of the same May 2025, “the reconciled amount owed by Jos DisCo stood at N98.7bn, leaving a disputed balance of N26.7bn between the two parties.”

The committee resolved that the admitted N72bn must be paid to the Federal Government within 60 days and instructed both NBET and Jos DisCo to reconcile the outstanding N26.7bn within 21 days and report back.

The Committee Chairman, Bamidele Salam, stressed the importance of timely remittances to the Federation Account, noting that the Federal Government would no longer condone non-compliance from operators in the power sector.

“This is public money, and the Federal Government urgently needs these funds to fulfil its responsibilities. We expect full compliance and accountability,” he said.

NBET had initially listed KEDCO’s debt at N211.7bn, but both parties reconciled it at N85.8bn.

KEDCO’s team, led by Hussani Sadiq, confirmed a verified debt of N81.5bn, with N4.3bn still under dispute.

The committee instructed KEDCO to present proof of payment of the N40.7bn within the 30-day deadline and to reconcile the disputed N4.3bn within three weeks.
