Fasting for the month of Ramadan will commence on Wednesday following the official sighting of the crescent moon in Nigeria.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Garbai El-Kanemi, on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, who was absent due to an official engagement outside the country.

The development confirms the beginning of the 1447 AH Ramadan fast for Muslims across the country.

With the declaration, Muslims nationwide are expected to begin the dawn-to-sunset fast on Wednesday, in line with Islamic tradition and one of the five pillars of Islam.

Ramadan is observed as a sacred period marked by fasting, prayer, spiritual reflection, and acts of charity. It also commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad.

The fasting period is expected to last 29 or 30 days, depending on the lunar calendar and the subsequent sighting of the next crescent moon.
