The village head of Shuwaka in Garga, Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, Mallam Hudu Barau, has been murdered by bandits a few days after he was kidnapped.

The Kanam Development Association (KADA) confirmed the tragedy in a statement on Monday signed by its chairman, Shehu Kanam, and secretary, Barr. Garba Aliyu.

According to the group, Barau was taken away six days ago and later found dead inside Wanka Forest.

They described his killing as a painful reminder of the insecurity that has continued to threaten lives across the area.

Community living in fear

KADA expressed anger that, despite constant appeals, both state and federal authorities have failed to take decisive action to end the repeated abductions and killings.

“The people of Garga and nearby villages live in fear every day. Our political leaders must act now to secure their people,” the group said.

The association said the worsening situation has left residents helpless and constantly looking over their shoulders for fear of more attacks.

Call for state of emergency

The group called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to immediately declare a state of emergency in the area and deploy more security forces to protect lives.

They also accused elected representatives from the zone of neglecting their duty to defend the people against bandits.

KADA warned that the silence of leaders in the face of these atrocities would no longer be tolerated.

“Government must act now to restore peace and stability to our community. We stand with the family of the late Sarkin Shuwaka and will keep fighting for justice and safety for our people,” the statement added.
