The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a 50 per cent reduction in train fares across the country to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The discount, which took effect this week following approval by the Federal Government, covers both standard-gauge and narrow-gauge services, including the Abuja–Kaduna, Lagos–Ibadan, Warri–Itakpe and Port Harcourt–Aba corridors.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the corporation’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Callistus Unyimadu, said the decision was aimed at supporting citizens at a time of increased travel demand.
The statement added that, “The 50 per cent fare reduction is part of our commitment to reducing the burden of transportation on Nigerians during the Christmas and New Year celebrations,”
Providing further details, the Abuja–Kaduna Train Stations Coordinator, Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim Modibbo, said the discounted fares took effect from December 23, 2025, and will remain in force until January 4, 2026.
“The reduction applies to all our train services nationwide within the stated period,” Modibbo said.
He explained that the policy replaced the previous practice of offering free rides during festive periods, citing challenges experienced in the past.
“In previous years, train services were offered free during the festive season, but due to abuse of the privilege by some passengers, the corporation decided to introduce a half-fare policy,” he said.
Modibbo added that the NRC had made adequate arrangements to ensure passenger safety and smooth operations.
“We have put in place sufficient security and operational measures to guarantee safe and orderly travel for passengers throughout the Christmas and New Year period,” he said.
