The Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has described the League as a continuous work in progress while commending Rivers United for qualifying for the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League — the first Nigerian club to achieve the feat in several years.
Speaking during an interactive session on a WhatsApp platform monitored by Sporting Tribune, Elegbeleye highlighted the significant progress made under his leadership. He noted that, unlike in the recent past, the League calendar is now stable and synchronized with the European football season.
According to him, the NPFL now boasts a major sponsor, while referees receive their entitlements promptly — a development that has boosted integrity and fair play. He further observed that away victories are now becoming a regular feature of the league, signaling improved competitiveness.
Elegbeleye, a former federal lawmaker, emphasized that the league management remains focused on ensuring that clubs provide quality facilities and standard home grounds that promote the free flow of football. This, he said, would help players fully express their skills and attract global attention to the Nigerian league.
