The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has welcomed the speculation about Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso potentially joining the party, describing it as a positive development for the party.
This statement was made by the APC Chairman, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, during a press briefing at the party’s headquarters on Maiduguri Road, Kano, on Friday.
Abbas emphasized that as part of its renewed hope agenda, APC is open to welcoming members from all political parties who wish to join. He highlighted that recent discussions have focused on the potential defection of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the expelled faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), to APC.
“The APC is ready to receive him, as we believe this will be a significant step for his political journey. Given that he has distanced himself from most political groups, APC stands as a place of political refuge for him,” Abbas said.
The chairman reiterated the party’s position, acknowledging citizens’ constitutional right to join any party of their choice. He stated that APC in Kano is prepared to integrate new members and that registration for defectors has already been set up at the ward level in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Abbas added that all new members, regardless of their background or status, are welcome to register at their respective wards. He assured current elected APC officials at various levels that their positions would remain intact in line with the party’s constitution.
“Any member, whether old or new, will have the right to run for any future party or elective position without any special preference,” he emphasized.
While the party is open to new members, Abbas expressed awareness that some individuals are turning to APC for political relevance after losing support in other parties.
He cautioned that the APC does not condone the formation of exclusive or cult-like political groups. Abbas also called on those who had previously criticized APC leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, to publicly apologize as a demonstration of respect and sincerity moving forward.
