The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed a bill establishing the Kaduna State Commission for Religious Affairs Law 2025, designed to promote peace and harmony among the state’s diverse faith communities.

The bill, which originated as an executive proposal from Governor Uba Sani, scaled its third reading following the adoption of a report presented by the Chairman, House Committee on Inter-faith, Hon. Nazeer Abubakar (Kawo Constituency).

Abubakar described the legislation as “timely and historic,” commending the governor and the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Dahiru, for their leadership and commitment throughout the process.

“This bill is an executive bill, and I must commend Gov. Uba Sani for bringing it to the House, as well as the Honourable Speaker for his leadership and commitment,” Abubakar said.

Commission to foster dialogue, peace

He explained that the commission would serve as a unifying platform for all religious groups, fostering dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among different faiths.

“Before the bill came to the Assembly, His Excellency formed a committee of learned individuals from both major religions who carefully reviewed and refined it.”

“Even after reaching the Assembly, it took us about six months of consultations, reviews, and amendments to ensure that no religious practice would be undermined,” he added.

According to him, the commission will not only promote interfaith harmony but also act as a bridge between government and religious institutions, creating avenues for collaboration and support for the less privileged.

Abubakar noted that the commission, the first of its kind in the state, will streamline interactions between government and faith-based organisations, strengthening unity and peaceful coexistence among residents.

Earlier in the plenary, the Assembly also passed the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Fund Bill 2025, aimed at providing sustainable financing for agricultural development and related activities across the state.
