Unidentified gunmen attacked the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Damaturu during a pre-dawn raid on Friday, leaving one police officer seriously injured.

The incident happened around 2:00 am on Friday, when the assailants stormed the NUJ Secretariat building.

The attackers shot the police officer assigned to guard the facility, striking him in the leg.

Reports confirmed that the officer was quickly taken to the emergency unit of the Police Hospital in Damaturu, where he is receiving treatment.

NUJ reacts to attack

Rajab Ismail Mohammed, Chairman of the NUJ Yobe Council, described the incident as both “unfortunate and scary” for journalists in the state.

He said the assault has created psychological pressure on media professionals who already face tough working conditions.

“This attack represents not just an assault on a security guard but an intimidation tactic against the press corps in Yobe State,” Mohammed stated.

He urged security agencies to launch a full investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
