The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed that a fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the popular Singa Market in Kano.
According to the Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, the emergency call was received around 5:00 a.m. from a resident named Mubarak Muhammad.
Firefighters from different stations across the city quickly rushed to the scene. When they arrived, they discovered that a one-story building known as Alhaji Abdulmunafi Yunusa House, measuring about 150 by 150 feet, was already in flames.
The fire destroyed 25 temporary shops attached to the front of the building and 19 stores on the upper floor. However, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to 24 other upper-floor stores and all the ground-floor shops.
Access difficulties and investigation findings
According to the Fire Service report, firefighters faced challenges reaching the site because several trailers were wrongly parked along the road leading to the market. Despite this, the team managed to bring the situation under control after several hours of work.
During the operation, officers met with the head of the building, Ambassador Garba Ibrahim Mai Maggie, and a security guard, Malam Ibrahim. They explained that the entire building used a single electric switch for power supply.
Following an investigation, officials suspected that faulty electrical wiring from that switch caused the fire, which is believed to have started in the temporary shops in front of the building.
Fire Service urges caution
The Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, thanked the public for their cooperation and urged business owners to maintain proper electrical installations and ensure safe wiring to avoid similar incidents.
He also advised traders and motorists to always keep access roads clear for emergency vehicles to prevent delays during rescue operations.
