Dino Melaye

Former senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing the opposition party of failing to provide the kind of leadership Nigeria urgently needs.

In a letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye declared his exit from the party “at all levels of involvement.”

PDP has lost direction — Melaye

In his resignation letter, which was shared publicly on Thursday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Melaye stated:

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement.”

He explained that his decision followed careful reflection on what he described as the PDP’s weakening political relevance and incapacity to provide a credible alternative to the ruling party.

“The PDP has lost its potency and capacity to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” he said.

“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda.”

Melaye, who contested and lost the 2023 Kogi State governorship election as the PDP’s candidate, said his decision came after deep introspection about the party’s direction and internal structure.

“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” the letter concluded.

As of press time, Melaye has not publicly announced his next political move or any new party affiliation.
