The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, has ordered a two-week suspension of academic activities following the death of a 200-level student who was crushed by an unidentified commercial driver along the Iseyin/Saki Road in Oyo State.

The deceased was a student of the Department of Agricultural Economics before the tragic incident occurred on Friday morning. It was further gathered that enraged students set the vehicle involved on fire after the driver fled the scene.

Confirming the development on Saturday, the Registrar of the institution, Olayinka Balogun, said the management had approved a two-week suspension of activities at the Iseyin campus following the student’s death.

He said, “The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin.

“This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over our university community, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

“In light of this grievous loss, and in recognition of the emotional toll it has taken on our students and staff, the university management has approved a two-week suspension of academic activities at the Iseyin campus, effective immediately.

“Consequently, all students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break.

“While students will be expected back in their classrooms on Monday, November 24, 2025, when academic activities resume, officers on essential services who may be required to be on duty will be informed in the usual manner.”

Balogun urged students to remain calm, support one another, and honour the memory of their late colleague.

In a similar case earlier in January, the Lagos State Government shut down Smiley Kids Montessori School, Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, following the death of a two-year-old girl, Rapheala Ogbodo, in a swimming pool accident.

Both incidents highlight the recurring temporary closure of educational institutions in response to student fatalities pending investigations and further administrative measures.
