The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, has issued a firm directive to officers under his command, declaring that random phone checks at checkpoints are no longer allowed.
During a meeting on Friday in Ilorin with Deputy Commissioners, Area Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Commanders to relay the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Commissioner Ojo stressed the need for professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights.
He emphasized that extortion, harassment, rights violations, and any form of misconduct would not be tolerated.
According to him, officers who meddle in civil disputes without criminal elements, unlawfully search people’s phones, or unfairly tag youths as “Yahoo boys” or internet fraudsters are guilty of serious misconduct and would face strict disciplinary measures.
Commissioner Ojo reiterated that arbitrary phone checks are prohibited, except in instances where such devices are already confirmed as evidence in active investigations.
He cautioned officers against engaging in these unlawful acts and assured the public, especially young people and students who have often been wrongfully targeted, that under his watch, their dignity and rights guaranteed in the Nigerian Constitution would be protected.
He further urged young citizens to be law-abiding, pledging that intimidation and unfair profiling would no longer be tolerated in Kwara State.
The Commissioner also revealed that enforcement of tinted glass permits will begin on October 2, 2025.
“Offenders with fake, invalid or no permits will be charged to court within 24 hours, and the public is advised to have the original copy of the tinted permits on them at all times.
The public are also urged to report any cases of extortion arising from the enforcement of tinted permits to the designated channels for complaints.”
