The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said it has completed the recovery of train coaches and locomotives that derailed on August 26, 2025, along the Abuja-Kaduna rail line near Asham.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, confirmed that engineers have re-railed and recovered all affected coaches and locomotives, which have been moved to designated workshops for further assessment and technical work.
He added that repairs on the main track are nearly complete, with safety inspection now underway while work on the secondary track is still ongoing and will remain closed until fully restored.
“Our team of engineers has successfully repaired the main line to a level that allows us to safely resume operations,” Opeifa said.
“While train services will recommence soon, work on the secondary track will continue simultaneously.”
NRC also announced that a comprehensive safety and infrastructure inspection has begun to ensure the corridor meets the highest standards of safety, durability, and reliability.
The corporation said its internal investigation revealed that the derailment was caused by human error, misuse of the emergency brake, and overspeeding.
Opeifa said all recommendations from the review team have been accepted.
NRC said, the train was carrying 618 passengers at the time of the incident. Twenty-two people were injured and are currently recovering.
An official announcement on the resumption date for Abuja-Kaduna train services is expected soon.
