The Nigerian Senate

Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North in Nigeria’s National Assembly, passed away on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, at a hospital in India. He was 52.

Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and won a second term in 2023, becoming the only senator from Nasarawa North to serve consecutive terms.

He was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Before joining the Senate, he served several terms in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, rising to Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.

Focus on constituency projects

Born on 3 August 1973 in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon, Akwashiki was known for his strong grassroots support.

In the Senate, he worked on projects related to rural development, education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure across his district.

Political leaders and community members described his death as a major loss, highlighting his contributions to both state and national politics and his efforts to improve social and economic opportunities for his constituents.

The family has not yet announced burial arrangements.
