Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved an upward review of monthly allowances for members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, Vigilantes, Hunters, and Neighbourhood Watch.
The beneficiaries operate under the Borno Youth Empowerment Scheme and play frontline roles in community security across the state.
The approval increases the monthly allowance for each volunteer from ₦30,000 to ₦50,000.
Leaders of the volunteer groups will now receive ₦150,000 monthly.
The revised payment has already commenced, resulting in a total monthly expenditure of ₦232.4 million by the state government.
The decision reflects the government’s effort to support community volunteers who face daily security risks.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Dauda Iliya, special adviser to the governor on media on Friday.
He said the allowance review was necessitated by rising living costs and the increasing dangers associated with security operations.
Governor Zulum had previously increased volunteers’ allowances from ₦15,000 to ₦20,000 in 2019.
The allowance was later reviewed upward to ₦30,000, which was consistently paid by the state government.
According to the statement, the latest increment will take effect from January 2026.
A total of 45 volunteer leaders are expected to benefit from the leadership allowance.
The CJTF, Vigilantes, Hunters, and Neighbourhood Watch have played key roles in counterinsurgency operations in Borno State.
Their contributions include the arrest of insurgent commanders and the provision of intelligence that has helped prevent attacks.
Governor Zulum commended the volunteers for their courage, resilience, and dedication to protecting communities.
He urged them to maintain discipline and sustain cooperation with security agencies to promote lasting peace and stability.
