In a historic political milestone, Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old member of the New York State Assembly and self-proclaimed democratic socialist, has been elected as the new Mayor of New York City.

The election, held on November 4, 2025, marks a groundbreaking moment as Mamdani becomes the first Muslim and first South Asian to lead the city.

According to official results, Mamdani won just over 50 percent of the total votes, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who contested as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

His victory is being celebrated as a major triumph for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. During his campaign, Mamdani pushed for bold reforms including affordable housing, free public transportation, improved childcare access, and higher taxes on the wealthy to fund social services.

Mamdani is set to officially assume office on January 1, 2026, succeeding outgoing Mayor Eric Adams.
