Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party, marking a major turning point in the state’s political trajectory.
The resignation took effect on Friday.
The development comes amid growing internal crises within the NNPP and signals a deepening political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor’s decision was announced in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, Yusuf conveyed his resignation in a letter addressed to the chairman of NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area.
In the letter, the governor thanked the party for offering him a political platform and supporting his political journey since 2022.
He acknowledged the cooperation of party leaders and members across Kano State during his time in the NNPP.
Governor Yusuf attributed his decision to persistent leadership disputes and legal challenges within the party.
He said the unresolved crises have continued to destabilize the NNPP at both state and national levels.
The governor noted that many of the disagreements are currently before the courts.
According to him, the prolonged conflicts have weakened internal cohesion and created uncertainty within the party structure.
He said the growing divisions have led to widespread disenfranchisement among members.
Yusuf stated that the cracks within the party now appear increasingly irreconcilable.
The governor said his decision followed careful reflection and extensive consultations.
He explained that the move was guided strictly by the interest of the people of Kano State.
Yusuf stressed that the resignation was taken in good faith and without bitterness toward the party.
He reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and continued development of the state.
The political shift is not limited to the governor alone.
According to the statement, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly also resigned their NNPP membership.
Eight members of the House of Representatives were said to have joined the defection.
In addition, 44 local government chairmen across Kano State reportedly exited the party alongside the governor.
The NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward secretary, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged receipt of the resignation letter.
He commended Governor Yusuf for his achievements in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.
Zubairu attributed the development to the lingering crisis within the party.
He said the party had no option but to accept the resignation of what he described as one of its most performing governors.
As of press time, Governor Yusuf has yet to officially declare his next political destination.
Political observers say the mass defection could significantly alter party dominance in Kano State.
The development is expected to shape political alignments as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
