The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of Labour Day, a national holiday in the US.

The US Mission disclosed this in a statement posted on its X handle on Sunday morning.

It said, “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of the U.S. Labour Day.”

The Punch reported that the Mission explained that the closure is meant to honor the efforts and contributions of American workers, a practice that dates back to 1882 when Matthew Maguire first suggested the holiday.

It added that although routine operations would be suspended, essential services will still be available through designated emergency contact channels during the holiday.

The statement also advised Nigerians planning to seek visas or consular services to make adequate arrangements and schedule their visits for dates after the observance.

Labour Day in the United States is a federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September each year.
