The Nigeria Police Force has summoned the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for questioning over his alleged involvement in Durbar activities during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, despite a police directive suspending such events.

According to an official letter dated April 4, 2025, and signed by the Commissioner of Police, Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, on the instruction of the Inspector General of Police, Emir Sanusi is expected to appear before the Force Intelligence Department headquarters in Abuja by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Security agencies had earlier placed a restriction on Durbar processions and related cultural displays during the Sallah period, citing safety and security concerns. The directive was communicated to relevant traditional institutions across the state.

Despite the restriction, Emir Sanusi was reported to have led Durbar-like processions during the celebrations and visited the Kano Government House, drawing large crowds. However, unlike the traditional Durbar involving horse riders, the Emir’s entourage was seen in cars.

The police invitation follows heightened tensions and incidents during the Sallah festivities.

Notably, on March 30, 2025, a 20-year-old man identified as Usman Sagiru from Sharifai Quarters was arrested for his alleged role in the killing and assault of vigilante members who were part of the Emir’s security detail during the Eid prayers.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Kano State Police Command has also invited a senior traditional titleholder, the Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, for questioning over a possible violation of the police ban on Durbar activities.

The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of status, comply with security directives intended to protect lives and property during major public events.
