A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the prosecution’s request to shield the identities of its witnesses in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The court’s decision aims to protect the witnesses’ security.
Justice James Omotosho granted the permission on Tuesday while ruling in an ex-parte application filed by the prosecuting lawyer, Adegboyega Solomon (SAN).
While arguing the application, Awomolo said the identities of the witnesses needed to be protected for security reasons.
He noted that the case against Kanu borders on terrorism and therefore, there was the need to protect the witnesses.
As quoted, the prosecution’s lawyer, Awomolo, had argued that shielding witnesses’ identities was necessary “for security reasons.” The case proceeds with the prosecution’s case ongoing.
Defence lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN) did not object to the prosecution’s application.
With the prosecution’s application granted, the trial continues with its first witness, identified as PWAAA, testifying. Defence lawyer Kanu Agabi requested reciprocal cooperation from the prosecution when considering the defendant’s bail application.
