No fewer than 65 soldiers have reportedly lost their lives after coordinated assaults by insurgents in Borno State, in what security analysts describe as one of the most lethal attacks on Nigerian troops in recent months.

According to security officials, fighters associated with Islamic State West Africa Province carried out multiple attacks on military bases in the northeastern state. The insurgents reportedly overran several positions belonging to the Nigerian Army, leading to significant casualties among soldiers.

Reports further suggest that during the assaults, the attackers also kidnapped hundreds of civilians, including women and children, from neighbouring communities.

The attacks have once again underscored the persistent security challenges confronting Nigeria, particularly in the northeast where insurgent groups have remained active for over a decade.

Military authorities say operations are ongoing to pursue the attackers and secure the release of those abducted, while additional troops have been deployed to the affected areas.

Security analysts caution that the development could further complicate efforts to defeat insurgency in the region, as communities continue to grapple with displacement and humanitarian crises.
